Team up or go solo for the artwork

If you’re going analog and illustrating using pen and paper, make sure you have access to a high-resolution scanner to digitize your artwork. You’re working with still images, and what’s happening on each page needs to be understandable from a few frames alone. Oftentimes, a writer will want more influence over how the story visually develops across the page. If this is the case, you may want to take a panel-by-panel (or ‘total script’) approach. Creating your own sense of pacing and movement between panels will come to you as you work and develop your style. There are different panel types which are useful tools to know for storytelling. They are pretty standard but they can be used in different ways and combinations to create drama in your story. I make sure that the panels lead the reader from left to right and down to mimic the usual reading pattern of a western-style comic book. All the action within the panels leads you across the page or down to the next tier of panels. To infuse your comic with powerful sound effects, harness the art of onomatopoeia. Strategically place words like “BOOM” or “SWOOSH” near the action, altering size and style to match the scene’s intensity.

Innovative layouts, like splash pages seen in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns or borderless panels like those in The Arrival by Shaun Tan, break away from conventional grids. These add visual interest and emphasize certain aspects of the story, like a character’s mental state or a shift in tone. Large panels can slow the narrative, allowing for detailed artwork and moments of reflection or impact.

Even if you don't have a plot fully planned, the characters are the most important. To help you conceptualise, sketch out your ideas in thumbnail scale or create a dummy. This will help you work through your ideas and get the best image laid out properly. All of these types of panels go into building a strong and well story-told page like this. Vibrant, saturated colors make a scene feel energetic and lively, whereas muted colors are used for a more subdued, realistic feel. Gutters also force the reader to come up with their own conclusion on how some scenes end.

Include their relationships, professions, skills, and hobbies to add depth. Character development is an integral part of adding depth to your story. Characters should be distinctive and memorable, with visual designs that reflect their personalities and roles in the story. Create suspense in your story by using gutters to separate scenes that do not have a clear ending. This creates curiosity in the reader and encourages them to keep reading to see what happens next. If you're inking/coloring illustrations from another artist, don't be afraid to ask questions if things aren't clear. Once your script is complete, it's time to start drawing.
